PFA Coatings

what is a pfa coating?

To start with it is a fluoropolymer, which means it has a Fluorine atom in it and is of the same family as PTFE. Unlike PTFE however, PFA is melt processable. When PTFE is cured the constituents don’t melt into one another, they butt up to each other. With PFA, the constituents soften and flow into each other.

The benefit of this is that the level of porosity at the surface of the cured coating is significantly reduced. In some formulations one can say the top coat is nearly non-porous.

PFA is used in a variety of industries and applications, from inside a hopper to stop bread dough from sticking through to the inside of a chemical reaction vessel for high performance chemical resistance.

PFA stands for PerFluoroAlkoxy and it is a co-polymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoroethers. It’s chemical formula is shown above. For more information about Impreglon and our PFA coating range call us on +44 (0) 1623 753 107 or complete our enquiry form.
