For Chromic acid anodising (not surprisingly!) a dilute Chromic acid solution is used operating at typically 38 – 42°C, this produces is very thin oxide layer (typically 2-5 microns), relatively soft but able to provide very high levels of corrosion protection.

The process was developed in the U.K by Bengough & Stuart in the 1920s and remains almost unchanged to this day.

The open pore structure of the oxide film provides an excellent key for organic and other applied coatings which also benefit from the barrier layer corrosion protection provided by the Chromic anodised film.

Corrosion protection for parts with deep crevices or riveted joints (the Chromic solution will not attack the oxide film if it is trapped in the component).
